COURSES

Palo Duro Wildfire Academy offers 4 categories of courses.  Each serves a distinct purpose in the professional development of firefighting personnel, from foundational knowledge for newcomers to specialized skills and leadership training for advanced roles.

ENTRY-LEVEL FIREFIGHTING

These courses are designed for individuals who are new to firefighting and provide foundational knowledge and skills needed to start a career in firefighting.

S-130/190, Firefighter Type 2, is the primary course in this category, focusing on basic firefighting techniques, safety, and understanding of fire behavior, along with hands-on field exercises. It requires no prerequisites, making it accessible to newcomers.

ADVANCED FIREFIGHTING & LEADERSHIP

These courses are intended for those who have some experience in firefighting and are looking to advance their skills and take on leadership roles. S-131, Firefighter Type 1, ICT5, and L-280, Followership to Leadership, among others, fall into this category. These courses cover tactical decision-making, leadership skills, and operational leadership in firefighting contexts. They are designed for individuals who have completed entry-level courses and are seeking to enhance their qualifications for higher responsibilities.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

This category encompasses courses that provide specialized technical skills related to firefighting but are not directly about combatting fires. Courses such as S-211, Portable Pumps and Water Use, and S-219, Firing Operations, offer expertise in managing portable water delivery systems and understanding the roles and responsibilities around firing operations, respectively. These courses are crucial for firefighters looking to specialize in certain technical aspects of firefighting operations.

INCIDENT COMMAND

The Incident Command category includes courses tailored for those aspiring to or currently in incident command roles. These courses, such as S-300, Extended Attack Incident Commander, are designed to enhance leadership, command, and situational awareness skills specific to managing fire incidents. They are suitable for experienced firefighting personnel aiming to take on significant command roles in incident management teams.
